Voice Acting
From Damasca
The Premise
Voice acting can make or break a game, depending on how it's done. Damasca's voice acting is no different, and depends solely upon the talent of our current staff or anyone who might eventually join the team alongside them. Voice acting is difficult to do right, and thus there is hesitation as to whether or not the idea to include much of it is a good one.
It has been thusly decided that voice acting be attempted for bosses, influential npcs, and as unintelligble grunting for unimportant enemies. They are, however, not to be finalized components of the game, until the decision to include or exclude each piece, and indeed voice acting in general, has been made. Only after the voice acting attempts have been judged by the community will such a decision be made, however, so work must be performed on the subject regardless. Because of that, the quality of the work will depend upon the maximum skill of each party involved in the recording process.
The actual inclusion of voice acting beyond grunts will probably be an add-on pack, just like recorded music, in order to keep actual download sizes small. To accomodate this, and the contingency that voice acting in general may be a bad idea, textual subtitles will be provided in their stead.
Voices
Voice samples to be created include grunts for jumping and landing, panting for running, scripts and extensive collections of one-liners for significant bosses, and scripts for important NPC's (and perhaps some non-important ones). There are, of course, others. Prospective voices for these include:
- Anthonius Runeblaze (Voices, recording, processing)
- Dart Zaidyer (Voices, recording)
- Veros? (Voices?)
- Celine? (Voices?)
- Frozen Pixie? (Voices?)
Technical
Voice samples will be converted into either ADPCM or Ogg Speex, if possible. As with standard sound effects, it will depend heavily upon whether an alternative to ADPCM creates too much overhead. File sizes will ideally be very small to accomodate low-bandwidth connections and hard disk requirements.
