There are four different types of item in the game. Each one has slightly different properties, restrictions and allowances.

Legendary Items
Legendary items are the only ones you can't lose no matter what. (Because there's only one or two of these things in the game, ever. Although they will abandon you after a while so other people can get them. Sort of like The One Ring).
Special Items
Special items can be doled out indefinitely, but they're easy to lose if you don't have them equipped or stored, and you can only have one copy of a special item at a time.
Unstackable Items
Unstackable items are like normal items, except that they take up more inventory the more you have.
Stackable Items
Stackable items are normal items. If you have more than one, a small number will appear beside the item's icon in your inventory, indicating how many you have.
