Description
These odd creatures have three stages.
Larvae
In their larval stage they resemble small flesh-coloured lizards with insect-like eyes. They feast mainly on mineral sources such as small rocks and pebbles. They are considered harmless, maybe even pet material. It's only when they reach pupa form that things start to take a turn for the worst.
Pupa
When entering pupa form, their skin will harden into rock and take the appearance of a common fossil. Their form grows and changes over the years until they finally resemble large statues, fashioned in the shapes of beasts. Many mistake their cellulite removal glowing red eyes to be rubies in this stage. Thieves and even some kings will crush them in this form in order to take their eyes, displaying them like a work of art. The pupa also holds a goo in its shell that makes a potent medicine.
Adult
After completing their transformation, they will break out of their rocky prison as an adult. A great departure from their larval form, they are now golden in color, walk upright and carry two long tentacle arms above their boney heads. Its strength and speed are a force to be recognised, and its tentacles are used to bind and ensnare its prey while its large mouth opens, eating its prey alive, bite by bite. A newly hatched adult is susceptible to injury while its outer layer hardens.
Habitat
Combat Strategy
While the larva fossil is easily defeated, the pupa requires more blunt force. An adult fossil is best fought from a reasonable distance to avoid its grappling tentacles.
