Description

Relatives to normal bats, these creatures spend their lives largely immobilized by their own bloated bodies. They are around the size of a pumpkin, and resemble large, black furry spheres with bat-like wings on the top. They are unlike normal bats in that they hang right-side up, using the claws on their wings to grapple the surface of a cave wall. They use a funnel-like mouth to inhale any insects unfortunate enough to get too close.

They are peaceful and will never purposely attack anything bigger than an insect except in self defense. Their call to fame, however, comes with their defense mechanism, which earned them their nickname "Kamikaze Bats". Their bodies are bloated thanks to two large bladders, each holding a different chemical substance. When the Bombat feels its family is threatened, it will sacrifice itself by allowing the two chemicals to interact, resulting in an explosion.

Many armies have tried to harvest this ability, but have always failed in retrieving any unexploded. The only known creatures that have used them successfully as weapons are some of the more clever and playful dragons. They will actually petrify the bats before plucking them from their caves and dropping them on an invading army, a misguided thief, or a plucky dragon slayer.
